Draft 3
Personal statement
The first bike I tried to fix on my own was a purple kids’ bike with a flat tire and streamers on the handlebars (note 1). Its owner, a seven-year-old named Dani, watched me pry the tire off with a spoon.

From the personal statement lesson
Original teaching sample — not a real applicant
Two openings about the same Saturdays at a bike repair co-op, by Rafael, a fictional senior.
Ever since I was young, I have always been passionate about helping others. (note 1) Volunteering at a bike shop in my community has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life (note 2). Through this experience, I learned many valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and responsibility (note 3).
- 1Could be anyone. Any applicant could open with this sentence.
- 2Tells instead of shows. Calling it meaningful doesn’t make the reader feel it.
- 3Lessons listed, not learned. Three big words, and no evidence for any of them.
The first bike I tried to fix on my own was a purple kids’ bike with a flat tire and streamers on the handlebars (note 1). Its owner, a seven-year-old named Dani, watched me pry the tire off with a spoon because I couldn’t find the tire levers. “Is that how you’re supposed to do it?” she asked. It wasn’t. (note 2) For my first two months at the Alder Street Bike Co-op, I fixed bikes the way I did homework: fast, alone, and without asking questions (note 3).
- 1A picture, not a summary. Concrete details put the reader right in the shop.
- 2Willing to look a little silly. A real line of dialogue shows confidence without claiming it.
- 3Names the old habit. Noticing a pattern is where reflection begins.
The takeaway: Start inside one moment. Use details only you know. Let the change show in what you did.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Book a free consult and ask us directly.
Who is it for, and when should I start?
High school students applying through the Common App. The summer before senior year is a great time to start, with room to write before the first deadlines. Juniors can start earlier. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian arranges enrollment.
What happens in the three sessions?
Each is a live, one-on-one session with your ProMed United tutor. The first sets your strategy and finds your best stories. The second shapes your personal statement. The third reviews your whole application before you submit. Dr. Dave, DO, MBS, designed the program.
How do unlimited edits work?
While you're enrolled, send any draft whenever it's ready: an essay, an activity entry, a supplement. Your tutor sends back comments and suggested edits, and you decide what to change. There's no cap.
Will anyone write my essays for me?
No. You write every word; your tutor comments and suggests, and you decide what to keep. With consent (a parent's or guardian's if you're under 18), tutors may use AI tools to flag unclear sentences or facts that don't match. The Common App asks you to affirm that your application is your own work. With us, it is.
How much does it cost?
$1,500 by bank (ACH) or $1,545 by card; the card price covers card processing. Installments available on request. Add the Pre-College Foundations Package and both are $3,775 by bank or $3,889 by card, 10% off.
Does it include a letter of recommendation?
Not on its own. A personalized letter from Dr. Dave comes with the Pre-College Foundations Package, based on your completed work there: a recommendation when the work supports one, otherwise a letter confirming completion. A recommendation is never guaranteed, and some colleges limit extra letters, so check each college's policy.
What is your refund policy?
All sales are final, except where the law requires a refund; see our Refund Policy for the full terms. Book a free consult to ask anything before you enroll.
