  • Reading: reading closely, finding the evidence, and keeping pace
  • Science, if your student takes it: reading graphs, tables, and experiments

Not sure which test? We'll help you choose.

Colleges that consider test scores generally accept either test, so the right one is usually the test your student scores higher on and feels better about (check each college's testing policy). On the free consult we look at any past scores, the test dates that fit your calendar, and how your student likes to work, and we recommend one test to focus on.

How tutoring is structured

From the free consult to test day.

One-on-one sessions, usually 2 to 3 a week. Here is the path from the free consult to test day.

  1. 1
    Before you buy

    Free consult

A short call with a parent or guardian and your student about goals, the test date, any past scores, and the weekly schedule. We recommend the SAT or the ACT and a package size, with no obligation.

  2. 2
    Before session 1

Matched tutor, fixed schedule, written agreement

We pair your student with a tutor matched to the test, their goals, and their availability, set the weekly schedule, and send you the attendance agreement in writing.

  3. 3
    Session 1

The diagnostic, also your Good Fit Consult

Your student takes a full, timed practice test. The tutor scores each section and logs every miss by type: a content gap, a timing problem, or a careless mistake. That error log drives the plan.

Session 1 is the first paid session with your matched tutor, and it is your Good Fit Consult, covered by our Good Fit Guarantee: if you're not happy after it for any reason, we refund that first session in full.

  4. 4
    Sessions 2 to 4

    The highest-yield gaps first

We start where the most points are being lost: usually math and reading, or science for students taking the ACT's optional Science section, depending on what the diagnostic shows.

  5. 5
    Every 3 to 4 weeks

    A full timed practice test

A full practice test under timed conditions, scheduled with you, to measure progress. We chart the score and the error types, then adjust the plan.

  6. 6
    Final 2 weeks

    Test conditions, timing, and pacing

Full timed practice tests under real test conditions, scheduled with you, plus timing and pacing work.

What every session looks like

Review, teach, then practice at test pace.

Every session follows the same rhythm, so your student always knows what to expect.

  1. Part 1

    10min

    Error review

Back over last session's misses and the homework, so mistakes get fixed instead of repeated.

  2. Part 2

    40–50min

    New instruction

The next highest-yield skill or strategy in the plan, taught with worked examples and guided practice.

  3. Part 3

    15–25questions

    A timed set

Questions at test pace to lock in the new skill. Every miss goes into the error log for next time.

Between sessions

20–30min

Written homework, with a set time to do it

After every session, your student gets 20 to 30 minutes of practice, written down with a set time to do it. The tutor checks it at the start of the next session, every time.

How long it takes

Most students need about 8 to 12 weeks.

At 2 to 3 sessions a week, that's roughly 30 to 45 hours of tutoring in total. The timeline depends mostly on the starting score and the target, and we refine it after the diagnostic.

  • Starting close to the target, such as within 2 to 3 points of an ACT composite goal? It may take less.
  • Starting well below the target? Plan for more time.

To pick a start date, count back 8 to 12 weeks from the test date, or further if your student is starting well below the target. That leaves room for the diagnostic, the gap work, progress tests, and the final two weeks under test conditions.

Typical prep window

How you'll know your student is ready

Ready means consistent practice-test results.

Our tutors look for all three of these on full, timed practice tests before calling a student ready.

  1. 1

On target three times in a row

Your student hits the target score on three full, timed practice tests in a row.

  2. 2

At least one in the final two weeks

At least one of those three tests is taken in the last two weeks before the real test.

  3. 3

    Scores holding steady

On the ACT, the composite isn't swinging by more than a point or two. On the SAT, the totals stay close together instead of jumping around.

One good score is luck. Three in a row is evidence.
How our tutors decide a student is ready.

Still short of the target two weeks out?

The fix is usually pacing or one weak section, not more hours, so we narrow the focus to whatever is costing the most points.

How we keep your student on track

Built so sessions actually happen.

Your student's effort matters most. Our job is to make showing up, and keeping up, as easy as possible.

A fixed schedule

The same days and times every week, set once at the start, so there's nothing to renegotiate. Reminders help, but the fixed schedule is what makes sessions happen.

Progress your student can see

We chart practice-test scores and error types, so your student can watch the number move. Students stay engaged when they can see the prep working.

An attendance agreement in writing

Before session 1, you get the cancellation policy, the rescheduling window, and what happens to missed hours in writing. Everyone knows the rules from the start.

A monthly parent check-in

A short update each month for the parent or guardian: recent practice-test scores and next steps, so you always know how it's going.

When it isn't working, we say so.

If a session is missed or homework starts slipping, the tutor asks your student what's getting in the way and adjusts the plan. If it keeps slipping, we'll talk with you honestly about whether more hours are likely to help right now.

Custom Tutoring

Packages of 10, 20, or 40 hours.

SAT & ACT Tutoring is sold as Custom Tutoring packages of hours you use with your matched tutor. As a guide, 40 hours is roughly one full prep cycle for a student starting in the middle of the range; 20 or 10 hours can suit a student already close to the target or working on one section. We suggest a size on the free consult.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Book a free consult and ask us directly.

SAT or ACT: which should my student take?

Colleges that consider test scores generally accept either one, so the better choice is usually the test your student scores higher on and feels more comfortable with. Check each college's testing policy. On the free consult we look at past scores, test dates, and how your student works, and we recommend one test to focus on.

How much does tutoring cost?

SAT & ACT Tutoring is sold as Custom Tutoring packages of 10, 20, or 40 hours. We share package pricing on the free consult, with no obligation.

How long does prep take, and when should we start?

Most students need about 8 to 12 weeks at 2 to 3 sessions a week, roughly 30 to 45 hours of tutoring in total. It depends mostly on the starting score: a student starting well below the target may need longer, and one starting close to it (for example, within 2 to 3 points of an ACT composite goal) may need less. A good rule is to start 8 to 12 weeks before the test date, or earlier if your student is starting well below the target.

Who will my student work with?

A tutor from the ProMed United team, matched to the test, your student's goals, and their schedule, one-on-one every session. Dr. Dave, DO, MBS, designed the tutoring approach and leads the team.

How do we get started?

A parent or guardian books a free consult, a short call with your student about goals, the test date, and any past scores. We recommend the SAT or the ACT and a package size, pair your student with a matched tutor, and schedule session 1: the diagnostic, which is also your Good Fit Consult.

Is SAT & ACT tutoring online or in person?

Online. Every session is a live one-on-one video session on the same days and times each week, set around school and activities.

What is the digital SAT like?

Students take it in the College Board's Bluebook app on a laptop or tablet. It has two sections, Reading and Writing and then Math, each split into two modules, and the second module adapts to how the student did on the first. Scores run from 400 to 1600, testing time is about 2 hours 14 minutes plus a short break, and a Desmos graphing calculator is built in for the whole Math section.

What's on the ACT now?

English, Math, and Reading make up the 1–36 composite score. Science is optional and scored separately, and so is the optional writing test. The test takes about 2 hours without Science and about 40 minutes more with it, and it is given online or on paper depending on the test date and test site. Check whether any college on your student's list asks for the Science score.

How will we know our student is ready?

When your student hits the target score on three full, timed practice tests in a row, with at least one taken in the final two weeks, and the scores are holding steady instead of swinging (on the ACT, the composite isn't moving by more than a point or two). One good score is luck. Three in a row is evidence. If the target is still out of reach two weeks before the test, the fix is usually pacing or one weak section, not more hours.

What happens if a session is missed?

Before the first session, you receive a written attendance agreement covering the cancellation policy, the rescheduling window, and what happens to missed hours, so there are no surprises. A missed session also gets a conversation with the tutor about why, so it doesn't become a pattern. Our general scheduling rules are in the refund policy.

How much homework is there?

About 20 to 30 minutes of practice after each session, written down with a set time to do it. The tutor checks it at the start of the next session, every time.

How do parents stay informed?

Parents are welcome on the free consult, receive the written attendance agreement before session 1 and the plan after the session-1 diagnostic, and get a short check-in each month on practice-test scores and next steps. A parent or guardian arranges tutoring for students under 18.

What is the Good Fit Guarantee?

Your first session with your matched tutor is your Good Fit Consult. If you're not happy after that first session for any reason, we refund that first session in full. For SAT & ACT Tutoring, that first session is the diagnostic. The guarantee applies to Custom Tutoring packages only.

Do you guarantee a score or a score increase?

No. No ethical tutor can guarantee an SAT or ACT score. Tutoring is designed to help your student find and fix the errors that cost points, manage time, and walk in prepared, and the practice-test results show everyone honestly how it's going.
