Learning the Rhythm

For eleven years, my grandmother's sewing 1machine a heavy treadle model, had sat under a dust cover in her hallway. Its iron frame was 2black in color and painted with faded gold flowers. Grandma had not sewn on it since her eyesight began to fade, and no one else in the family knew how. The summer I turned fifteen, I asked Grandma whether I could make it run again.

The belt, which carried the motion of the foot treadle up to the machine, had cracked in two, so I ordered a new one. Then I oiled every moving joint I could 3find, the wheel began to spin freely.

The machine looked ready to run. 4Therefore, it would not sew a single stitch: every time I pressed the treadle, the thread snapped. After my third broken thread, Grandma came over from her armchair. She rested her hands on my shoulders and counted out a slow beat while I rocked the treadle, heel and then toe, until the wheel kept a steady pace. 5 By the end of the afternoon, I had sewn my first straight seam, and Grandma was already planning the quilt we would make together.
